A family gathering can often be a stressful event for both kids on the autism spectrum and their parents. Birthday parties, family barbecues, and holiday gatherings are all stressful events for families with a child on the Autism Spectrum. Things such as changes in schedule, possible breaches in restrictive diets, unpredictable environments, and misunderstanding family members are just some of the reasons that may lead you to consider skipping the next family event.
Parents of kids with autism often struggle to balance embracing their child's specific interest with exposing them to new experiences in life and play. The key word here is balance. As human beings, we all have a right to engage in activities that are fun and exciting to us. If your child has highly specific and limited interests they deserve respect and love in the form of time to do whatever it is that makes them happy, as long as they are not hurting themselves or others.
